Clayton James started tattooing at 18 years old in 2000 under the late Tim Cooper of Eye Spy Tattoo in his home town of Petaluma, California.

His passion and curiosity of the craft has taken him around the globe regularly, working in epic locations like Alaska and Iceland, studying and practicing to get a deeper understanding of art and people. 

In 2005, after working with Khaljan Bedros in both San Francisco and Santa Rosa, Clayton helped him open Electric Oni Tattoo in its original location. In 2012 he purchased the Oni from Khal upon his retirement. 

Clayton enjoys tattooing in a variety of styles and still loves doing small custom designs as well as flash while most of his efforts these days are focused on large scale compositions in Japanese and Americana inspired motifs.

On the rare occasion he is found on the outside of his natural habitat (the tattoo shop), he will most likely be on one of his motorcycles, reading stoic philosophy or picking up heavy things just to set them back down (in the gym).
